[Class 44.] Fasteners for binding loose leaves are made wholly of flexible and extensible rubber in one piece, and comprise a shank with integral head portions at opposite ends adapted to be deflected or compressed in relation to the shank to facilitate threading through coincident holes in a plurality of loose leaves, and of such form as to prevent them from being passed directly through the holes. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the shank a has two identically-shaped heads b, c provided with outwardly projecting pointed limbs d, which may be compressed on to the shank ; in other constructions the heads are adapted to be doubled over about a longitudinal centre line in order to reduce their normal width, or to be deflected or tilted out of normal position so as to lie alongside the shank, or are apertured and adapted to be compressed during insertion. Where the fasteners are apertured two or more may be passed through holes in the leaves and a cover, and a rod provided with a head is passed through the apertures at each side of the leaves ; or one long fastener may be passed through two sets of holes with the heads located on one side and a rod then passed through the apertures. The rod or rods may be pierced for the reception of the hasp of a padlock &c. In the construction, shown in Fig. 19, a long fastener is used which passes through the batch of leaves three times, and the ends are engaged by a locking-plate n which extends between the cover flanges g. The plate n is gapped at p for the reception of the shank a. If desired, an auxiliary locking device to engage the heads to prevent accidental retraction, in the form of a pivoted hasp, may be provided on the cover flanges.
