Abstract

Filaments, threads, and the like are produced by dry or wet spinning processes from solutions containing cellulose esters or ethers, for example, cellulose acetate of from 52 to 62,5 per cent acetyl content, and methylene ethylene ether. The methylene ethylene ether may be the sole solvent, or may be present in conjunction with other low, medium, or high boiling solvents and/or diluents. The solutions may contain other constituents, for example, dyestuffs, pigments, or substances reducing flammability. In the production of filaments, films, &c. by wet spinning processes, the methylene ethylene ether may be present in the coagulating bath, preferably in high concentration, for example, as in the processes of Specifications 179,234, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], 340,324, and 340,325. According to a modification, the methylene ethylene ether is used in the treatment of already formed filaments, threads, films, &c., for example, to diminish the tendency of fabrics to slip, split, or ladder as in Specification 280,990, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], to improve the pliability, extension, or knotting properties of filaments or threads, e.g., by shrinking processes as described in Specification 389,823; and to assist in the absorption of various liquid and solid materials by filaments, fabrics, &c., for the purpose of dyeing, printing, discharging, loading, relustring (as in Specification 259,265, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.]), and delustring. The methylene ethylene ether may be employed in making up sizes for textiles. In examples, (1) cellulose acetate fabric is printed with a paste containing dyestuff or pigment, diethylene glycol, water, methylene ethylene ether, and gum arabic; (2) a solution of cellulose acetate in aqueous methylene p ethylene ether is spun by dry-spinning methods; (3) a solution of cellulose acetate in aqueous methylene ethylene ether is spun into aqueous dioxane; (4) an acetone solution of cellulose acetate is spun into a solution of methylene ethylene ether.
