Abstract

393,610. Recording sound optically. PETERSEN, A. C. G., 183, Norrebrogade, Copenhagen, POULSEN, A., 7, Hoyrups Alle, Hellerup, near Copenhagen, and BRITISH ACOUSTIC FILMS, Ltd., Film House, Wardour Street, London. Dec. 1, 1931, Nos. 33297 and 33298. [Class 40 (ii).] A variable width constant density record of sound is made in the form of two or more traces which are symmetrical about a longitudinal axis and have their zero or middle lines displaced from that axis, or an axis parallel thereto, proportionately to the volume of the sound recorded. Errors in reproduction due to background noise from excess of transparent portion of film and lack of accurate lateral adjustment of the film in relation to the slit are thereby reduced. Fig. 1 shows a recording apparatus for producing the record shown in Fig. 4. Light from source S is directed through triangular aperture b on to an oscillograph mirror m which reflects an image of the aperture on to a screen D having a slit d through which the beam passes to the film F. The beam is modulated by the sound to produce two wavy traces and is further modulated by a rectified component of the sound current so that the zero or mid lines of the traces are displaced from a longitudinal axis between the traces proportionately to the intensity of the sound as shown in Fig. 4. One of the modulating effects may be applied to movement of the mirror and the other to movement of the diaphragm B with the triangular aperture b or of the slit plate D or of a second mirror in the path of the beam. Alternatively, the whole modulation may be applied to movement of the oscillograph mirror. The apex of the triangular aperture may be replaced by a narrow parallel slit to avoid errors in the record when the apex is aligned with the slit. In a modification, the plate B is provided with two sideby-side triangular apertures and the record shown in Fig. 7 is then produced. Fig. 9 shows the record produced when the aperture is formed by three side-by-side triangular apertures. In this case, the outer apertures produce parallel records of the outer ends of the traces at their greatest amplitude. Specifications 377,675 and 380,850 are referred to.
