Abstract

An asphalt paving-composition is made from old asphalt pavings by pulverizing the old material, preferably in a pulverizer of the impact type; thereby increasing the voids of a heated and compressed sample as compared with a similarly treated sample of the unpulverized old material, further increasing the voids if necessary by the addition of sand and/or crushed stone, heating the mixture to about 350 DEG F. while agitating, adding bitumen and/or flux oil and filler if desired to the heated mass, and thoroughly mixing, the amount of added bitumen, flux oil and filler being such that a heated and compressed sample has up to approximately 5 per cent of voids. In a modification, the pulverized material instead of being heated is placed in a pugmill mixer to which are added paraffin oil or the like in amount about 25 per cent of the weight of the bitumen in the material, sand and/or crushed stone to raise the voids to about 10 per cent, and bitumen cut back with 25 per cent of paraffin oil or the like, and filler, the amount of bitumen and filler being such that the mixture, after being laid, rolled and compressed by traffic, shall have from 1.5 to 5 per cent of voids. All or any of the added ingredients are heated to approximately 200 DEG F. prior to mixing.
