Abstract

393,095. Packing ; closing mouths of bags. BELCHER, D., 600, South 4th Street, Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S.A. June 22, 1932, No. 17660. [Class 94 (i).] A method of closing and sealing bags or like containers consists in applying gum or other adhesive to a portion of the bag walls, folding said gummed wall portion over the bag body and laterally extending other portions of the bag walls beyond the bag body whereby an opposite wall portion is folded over said first folded wall portion, applying an adhesive to said laterally extending wall portions, and finally folding said laterally extending wall portions against the bag body. Apparatus for performing this method comprises a drum 2 rotatably mounted on a shaft 3 to which are hinged four wall members (not shown, but situated in the plane of the paper) which, with the drum face, form two sides for each of four bag-forming compartments, and which are cam-operated to move towards and from the drum face. The bottoms of the compartments are formed by centring-plates 30, and the other two sides are formed by two plates 26, 27, both of which are cam-operated, but the wall 26 being practically stationary relative to the wall 27. A bag 53 slides down a shoot (not shown) and is received by a bag-compartment, the walls of which are opened for reception. The drum rotates anticlockwisely and as the bag travels towards the cam-operated closing fingers 55 the walls close in around it. Just before the rear wall of the bag is engaged by the fingers 55, Fig. 17, adhesive 92 is applied by a brush (not shown). The fingers, being recessed at their ends as at 55a, then move outwardly and extend side wall portions 98, Fig. 18, spreading gum from the patch 92 to the underside wall portions. Continued rotation of the drum brings the bag under two rotating presser feet 82 having yieldinglysupported gumming elements 101 which apply bands of adhesive 99 to the extended wall portions which rest on the drum face and on an extended portion of a side wall. Folding means 107, 108 then fold down these extended portions on the bag, as shown in Fig. 20. The bags are then carried around, the folded portions being held in position by a flexible element 109, until the bag walls open and they drop on to a conveyer, from which they are pushed laterally by a cam-operated plunger.
