[Class 100 (iv).] In a process for the manufacture of carbon paper, the paper after being coated with copying material is passed between a support heated to a temperature above the melting points of the waxes contained in the material and a scraper, the pressure of which on the paper against the support is sufficient to cause the carbon to penetrate the paper while removing the excess of waxy materials, so that the paper issues dry and ready for immediate use. A paper web 4 is coated by a roller 11 partially immersed in ink contained in a reservoir 12, and a scraper 21 co-operates with a roller 10 to press the ink into the paper and at the same time to remove any excess. The roller 10, the roller 11, and the reservoir 12 are heated. The roller 11 is adjustably mounted in pivoting arms and is provided with cutaway parts at the centre and ends so as to leave uncoated central and marginal strips on the webs. The scraper 21, which may also be heated, is spring-pressed against the roller 10, the pressure being adjustable by means of a nut which engages a screw-threaded bolt attached to the end of the spring ; the blade is mounted in a slotted support and held in position therein by screws. Three rolls of paper may be used, a suitable unit for printing any required letterpress &c. being provided for each ; two of the webs are then coated on the back as described above, with the exception of the side margins and a central strip. The webs are fed forward by rollers 26, 27, the roller 27 being cut away so as to contact only with the central and marginal non-coated parts of the web, and the three webs are then associated and joined by passing between knurling- rollers, which unite the uncoated central parts of the webs. A line of perforations is provided on each side of the knurled junction and the webs are passed between rotary cutters which sever the webs centrally through the knurled portion and also trim the edges, and are finally cut by transverse cutters into forms as shown in Fig. 9, where 2b, 3b, 4b represent the printed sheets, the first two of which are coated on the back with copying material, united at their edges by knurling 41, and each having a line of perforations 42.
