392,470. Doors ; panels. CROWHURST, J., 140, Oliver Street, Birkenhead, Cheshire. Dec. 6, 1932, No. 34506. [Classes 20 (iii) and 20 (iv).] A door or panelled structural unit for use in constructing walls, articles of furniture or the like consists of front and rear panels 18 supported at their edges in a framework 10, 11 to form a hollow body and both provided on their inner faces with ribs 17 which are slotted for connection with additional stiffening members 20 provided between the frame members to support the panels intermediate their edges. The stiffening members 20 comprise longitudinal and transverse members in slotted engagement as shown in Fig. 5, and the longitudinal members are provided with dovetail slots 25 at intervals for engagement with correspondingly-shaped parts on the ribs 17. The ribs 17 are secured transversely of each panel as shown in Fig. 4 by adhesive and are slotted as at 19 to permit engagement with the slots 25 of the stiffening members 20. After such engagement the stiffening members are moved as a whole transversely of the corresponding panel so as to cause the dovetail slots 25 to engage corresponding dovetail formations on the ribs 17. Alternatively, each rib may be of dovetail cross-section throughout its length, except at the slots 19. The frame members 10, 11 have undercut rabbetted surfaces for engagement with the tapered edges of the panels, or the connection may be by rectangular mortices beneath the outer faces of the frame members engaging tenons on the panels. The side and end frame members 10, 11 are connected by dowel joints, such as by a rectangular recess in one member with a dowel pin projecting longitudinally thereof engaging with the end of the abutting member. The side frame members 10 and the stiffening members 20, if desired, may be perforated at one or more points to permit of a circulation of air within the hollow body. Alternatively, the space between the two panels may be filled with a fire- or sound-proof material.
