[Class 83 (iii).] A nut-tapping mechanism of the type in which the nuts are rotated over a reciprocating tap provided with an arcuate stem has a rotatable shifter device adapted to act on the tapped nuts carried by the stem. The bed 1 of the machine has guideways 3 for a slide 2 reciprocated by cam-and-lever mechanism 11, 12 from a shaft 10 connected to the drive for the nut holder 7. A fixed strip 4 intersects the slide 2, its upper surface being flush with that of the slide and serving to support the nuts which pass off the tap 18, the arcuate stem 20 of the tap is concentric with a block 27, fixed to the slide, through the centre of which passes a rotatable pin 21, the upper end of this pin carries a shifter device 22 and the lower end is connected by a lever to the fixed member 4 so that it is rotated upon movement of the slide 2. The nuts are fed from a shoot 8, and pushed into position in the rotating holder 7 by a plunger 9 so as to engage the tap 18, the latter is fed into the nut bv movement of the slide 2 and the friction of the tapped nuts resting on the member 4 tends to move these towards the arcuate portion 20 ; the shifter device having a lip 23, Fig. 2 (not shown), is moved and tends to push the nuts, one at a time, from the end of the tap stem into a receptacle 29, the return movement of the slide 2 frees the lip 23 from the nuts and the shifter swings back to its initial position. An alternative method of oscillating the shifter device is described comprising crank-and-lever mechanism driven by gearing from the nut-holder. In lieu of the oscillating shifter device a rotatable ratchetoperated disc with a shaped rim may be used for moving the nuts around the arcuate portion of the stem.
