Abstract

<PICT:0391863/IV/1> <PICT:0391863/IV/2> <PICT:0391863/IV/3> Artificial filaments, threads, ribbons, and like materials obtained by dry spinning from solutions of cellulose esters or ethers are treated, when in the solidified state immediately after or continuously with their production, with steam which is insufficiently moist to cause delustring. The treatment is preferably of short duration and in any case is not to be so prolonged as to render the products resistant to delustring on treatment with hot aqueous media. The products may consist of cellulose formate, acetate, propionate, butyrate, nitro-acetate, or methyl, ethyl, butyl, or benzyl cellulose, or mixed esters, mixed ethers, or ether-esters such as ethyl cellulose acetate, and oxy-ethyl cellulose acetate. The materials are preferably treated while travelling from point to point. The steam is preferably dry and if desired it may be superheated to 150 DEG C. The process may be carried out continuously with highspeed spinning. Residual solvent is removed from the filaments during the steam treatment. The filaments so treated are more amenable to textile operations such as knitting, weaving, twisting, winding, and pirning. When applied to threads which have been subjected to one stage of twisting, further stages of twisting are found to be largely productive of snarls when the crape threads are subsequently woven into fabrics and submitted to craping treatment. As shown in Fig. 1, filaments 2 from a spinning cell 1 pass over guides 6 and wiper 12, round a feed roller 9, and then to a cap-spinning, ring-spinning, hanking, or drum-winding apparatus. When spinning has commenced, the filaments are pushed down into the vessel 4 by means of a rod 5, the end of which has a smooth surface or is provided with a pulley wheel. Steam is supplied to the vessel 4 by a pipe 7 carrying a number of jets, and is withdrawn together with condensate, if any, and residual solvent through the outlet 8. As shown in Fig. 3, the filaments 2 p pass upwardly through the steaming vessel 4, over a guide 14, and thence to a feed roller and winding device. A receiver 15 for condensate is placed below the vessel 4 which is open at both ends. As shown in Fig. 4, steaming is carried out in a continuation of the spinning cell, the steaming compartment being separated from the spinning compartment by a partition 17. Evaporative medium enters the cell through the pipe 20, passes through the aperture in the partition 17, and is withdrawn together with steam through the outlet 18. Condensate is collected in the trap 19. The Provisional Specification refers also to the treatment of materials obtained by wet spinning processes. Specifications 332,187, 332,231, 332,527, [all in Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], and 357,576, [Group IX], are referred to.
