Abstract

391,320. Moulding concrete blocks &c. SCHAEFER, W., L.14.11, Mannheim, Germany. May 17, 1932, No. 13965. [Class 87 (ii).] In concrete block or slab-making machines, of the kind in which solid or hollow blocks are made with or without tensioned reinforcement in successive superposed layers with paper or like separating sheets by means of a travelling bogie carrying the feeding hopper and the tamping-mechanism, the sides of the mould and the cores for forming hollow blocks, or both, are carried on the bogie and are moved forward intermittently with intervals of rest at a rapid pace in comparison with the uniform slower forward movement of the bogie. The concrete hopper 2 and tamping-machine 1 are mounted on a trolley 5 which can move laterally in the bogie frame 3 to position them over any one of a number of rows of moulds 46. As the bogie passes from left to right in Fig. 2 over the long mould bed the following operations are performed. (1) A layer of concrete is delivered from the hopper 2 on to the mould base, the quantity being regulated by the adjustable door 8. (2) Tamping arms 9 driven from the motor 10 level and compress the layer. (3) A layer of fine cement 16 is applied for surfacing and is smoothed by the member 17. (4) A set of reinforcing wires 53 is drawn from the reels 33 by the moving bogie to be embedded in the blocks of the next higher layer. Suitable guides, weight-tensioning means and clamps are provided to maintain the wires in tension during the idle return run of the bogie. (5) Two sets of round or oval core-pieces 28 are moved forward alternately at intervals with a jerky motion relatively to the bogie by cam mechanisms in order to form the holes in hollow blocks. The grooves made by the suspending bars 21, 22 of the plungers are tamped out by the rearward tamping-arm 9. After each layer of blocks is made, a layer of paper is laid between it and the next superposed layer. In some cases, the side walls of the moulds may move with the bogie and have a similar jerky movement to that imparted to the core-pieces.
