Abstract
For protecting an artificial silk cake obtained by the centrifugal spinning process, an elastic tubular member, preferably a loosely knitted tube or similar textile product is introduced into the aperture of the cake, and the protruding ends are folded over the exterior surface of the cake. The tubular member may first be applied to a carrier in the form of a lag, or loose spiral which is then introduced into the cake. The cake is then removed from the carrier. The protected cake may then be subjected to liquid treatment and to centrifuging and it may be dried in this condition. The dried cake may be further worked up without entirely removing the protective cover, for example, the ends of the tube may be folded back without removing the tube from the cake.
