Abstract

The product obtained by calcining aluminium phosphate with caustic alkali, alkali carbonate, or alkali sulphate and carbon is leached with caustic alkali and from the solution obtained alkali phosphate is separated by crystallization and a part of the alumina by hydrolysis; the mother liquor, containing free caustic alkali and sodium aluminate, with residual alkali phosphate, is used as leaching agent for the next batch of decomposed phosphate. In an example, a mixture of phosphate and sodium carbonate is reacted at 800 DEG C. in a rotary furnace. The solution obtained by leaching with caustic soda is filtered from the residue above 75 DEG C. and then cooled to 17 DEG C. to separate the bulk of the sodium phosphate. About half the alumina is then precipitated by hydrolysis at 30 DEG C., and the mother liquor used for the leaching step in a second operation. By using waste alkali lyes from the artificial silk or bauxite industries for effecting the original leach, large crystals of sodium phosphate are obtained and the alumina is separated substantially free from silica.
