Abstract

Smooth sheet-like material is obtained by forcing a highly concentrated solution of a cellulose derivative under pressure through a slit-shaped orifice and receiving the shaped product directly on a supporting surface which may be of polished metal, glass, or baked synthetic resin. The supporting surface may be the periphery of a rotating wheel, or a moving band of metal or paper, or it may be a stationary surface. The cellulosic solution may be placed in a hopper and subjected to fluid pressure whereby it is forced through the slit, or it may be fed to the slit by means of gear pumps. The hopper may be provided with a heating jacket or coil. The solution may be extruded on to the supporting surface at an angle other than a right-angle. If desired the supporting surface may travel at a greater speed than the speed of extrusion, in order that the sheet may be stretched and reduced in thickness. In an example, a 30 per cent solution of cellulose nitrate in acetone and camphor is fed through a slit from a hopper and under a pressure of 5-75 lbs. per square inch above atmospheric pressure on to a polished nickel wheel, and the volatile solvent is evaporated, leaving a smooth sheet. Higher concentrations of cellulose derivative such as 66 per cent and over may be employed. The cellulose derivative may be cellulose acetate or other cellulose ester, or ethyl cellulose or other cellulose ether. Cellulose derivatives of low viscosity characteristics may be employed. In addition to the volatile solvent, the solution may contain a plasticizer such as camphor, triacetin, an alkyl phthalate or tartrate, or monomethyl xylene sulphonamide. The solution may also contain pigments, effect materials, stabilizers such as urea, and other ingredients. Thin sheets for wrapping foodstuffs, tobacco products and other articles, or thicker sheets for photographic, cinematographic and other purposes, may be obtained. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of a doctor blade for spreading the solution of cellulose derivative upon the casting surface. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
