Abstract

388,438. Aircraft framework. VICKERS (AVIATION), Ltd. and WALLIS, B. N., Byfleet Road, Weybridge, Surrey. 'Aug. 27, 1931, No. 24109. [Class 4.] Fuselages or other bodies of aircraft having longitudinal members and bracing-members, are constructed so that the axes of the bracing- members are geodetic lines in the contour of the structure, said members having a greater radial depth than width and being secured to each other where they intersect, so that the tendency of one bracing-member to bend outwards under endwise compressive forces is balanced by the tendency of the opposed bracing-member to bend inwards under endwise tensile forces. In one form, the structure includes four tubular booms, such as a, a<1>, subdivided lengthwise into bays in each of which channel sectioned bracing-members c .. c<3> are arranged. The bracing-members are connected together at their intersecting point between the booms by riveting a bent portion of each web c<4>, Fig. 4, to a plate d<1> and then riveting gusset plates d<2>, d<3> to the flanges. The other end of each bracing-member is riveted as at c<6>, Fig. 5, to one of the tubular booms, each of which is provided with an end fitting which includes a U-shaped member having parts e<1>, e<2> acting as gusset plates which are riveted to the flanges of the adjacent bracing-members. The middle e<5> of each end fitting is provided with a hole e<6> by which it is seated on an axially extending flange e<7> of a key-plate h which connects the tubular booms together as described in Specification 334,405, [Class 4, Aeronautics]. The bracing-members with their intersecting fittings and end fittings may be constructed by the method described in Specification 376,364. Stringers fare attached outside the structure for carrying a fabric covering ; similar stringers may also be provided on the inside of the structure. In a modification one bracing-member in each bay is continuous from boom to boom and the intersecting member is secured to it at its centre. Lattice-braced booms and bracing- bars may be employed and according to the Provisional Specification the construction may be simplified by employing straight bracing- members between the tubes and intersecting fittings.
