Abstract
388,153. Filters. MOTOR IMPROVEMENTS, Inc., 365, Frelinghuysen Avenue, Newark, New Jersey, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Liddell, R. P. F. ; 291, Mt. Kemble Avenue, and Williams, L. W.; 297, Mt. Kemble Avenue, Morristown, New Jersey, U.S.A.) Dec. 11, 1931, No. 34396. Convention date, Dec. 11, 1930. [Class 46.] A filter comprising a casing divided into inlet and outlet sections bv a stationary filtering unit is provided with means for cleansing the filter by forcing filtered fluid reversely through the filtering unit without change in the contents of the casing, there being a connection between the inlet and outlet sections additional to the connection afforded by the filtering unit itself. The oil filter shown comprises a shell 11 connected by an annular nut 12 to a base 10 formed with an inlet 27, an outlet 28, and a central well 10a. A cup 13 of the shape shown fits into the well 10a and is furnished with a tube 14 resting on inwardly bent tongues 15. A fluted drum 16 extends into the cup 13 with the tube 14 passing through a serrated opening in it and fitting into an offset part 17 at the top. The cylindrical filtering unit 18 surrounds the fluted drum 16. It consists of a helically wound thin metal ribbon provided with spacing ribs at intervals and preformed with definite curvature. A sleeve 20 provided with a handle slides on a central tube 19 and carries a pump plunger 23 fitting the tube 14. The plunger is normally locked in the position shown by arms on the sleeve 20 passing under the tongues 15. Apertures 25, 26 are formed in the upper part of the tube 14 and sleeve 20 respectively. The oil passing through the filter unit 18 passes along the flutes of the drum 16, through the serrated opening round the tube 14, through the aperture 25 into the tube 14, then through aperture 26 and tube 19 to the outlet 28. A reverse flow is caused by pulling up the sleeve 20 and plunger 23, thus reducing the capacity of the outlet section of the casing and increasing the capacity of the inlet section, unfiltered oil passing into the tube 14 through the opening formed by bending up the tongues 15. In a modification the inlet and outlet are in a head at the top of the casing and the central tube and sleeve are dispensed with, the pump plunger being carried by a rod provided with an operating handle.
