386,981. Gas-producers. ODELL. W. W., 61, Broadway, New York, U.S.A, May 22, 1931, No. 20207/32. Divided application. [Class 55 (i).] A method for the continuous manufacture of producer gas comprises supplying an oxygencontaining gas such as air, together with a hydrocarbon such as natural gas, methane, propane, or butane, with or without steam, to a bed of incandescent fuel, the resulting gas containing nitrogen, but consisting mainly of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The producer blast may be upwards or downwards. The hydrocarbon may be in the form of an atomized liquid, or petroleum refinery gas may be used, and the air and steam are preheated to between 1200‹ and 2000‹ F. A gas producer suitable for use in the process comprises a grate 3 and tuyere 13 supplied with air from pipe 5, air for a downdraught being supplied through pipe 5<1>. The hydrocarbons are introduced through an inlet 7, or through an inlet 11, which may be used as a gas outlet during an up draught, the gases being withdrawn through pipe 17 during a down-draught. Steam is admitted from pipe 14 having control valves 15, 16. The amount of air supplied is sufficient to maintain the temperature of the fuel bed at about 900‹ F., and is less than half that required for complete combustion of the hydrocarbon.
