Abstract
386,742. Resistance coatings and deposits. FOWLER, L. J., 20B, Anerley Park, MUSGRAVE, J. L. and CRITTALL & CO., Ltd., R., 43, Bloomsbury Square, both in London. Nov. 11, 1931, No. 31212. [Class 37.] In an electric heating-apparatus in which the resistance consists of metal sprayed on to a base of refractory insulating material, the spray is moved along a predetermined path so that the metal is deposited upon the base in a zone of regular thickness and cross-sectional area. Alternatively the spray may be stationary and the base be moved. A layer of insulating material may be attached to one or both sides of the refractory base; and behind this a layer of heat-resisting material, or one layer may serve both purposes. Alternatively the base, after the resistance metal has been sprayed thereon, may be dipped in an insulating liquid which is then allowed to dry. For heating boilers, urns, &c., the resistance metal may be sprayed on the underside of the refractory insulating base, and covered with insulating heat-resisting material. The base may be arranged beneath the boiler &c. or may form the bottom thereof, in which case the upper surface may be sprayed with another metal or enamel. Alternatively the side of the base on which the resistance metal is sprayed may form the bottom of the vessel, in which case this side is also treated with a non-corrosive insulator or enamel. The invention is applicable to heating sterilizers, bronchitis kettles, glue-pots, sealing-wax heaters, coffee percolators, &c. For use in ovens, grills, hotplates, boiling tables, or toasters, the refractory base on which the resistance metal is sprayed may constitute a structural part of the article, or a separate unit. In the latter case, a layer of solid material may be interposed between the refractory base and the structural part to prevent unduly high temperatures. The heater may be used as a convection heater or as a heater in a trunk for a ventilation system. According to the Provisional Specification a stencil may be placed over the refractory base and metal sprayed over the stencil.
