Abstract

386,684. Protective cut-out arrangements; automatic circuit breakers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and WILSON, W., of General Electric Co., Witton, Birmingham. July 23, 1931, No. 21071. [Class 38 (v).] Electric-motor actuation; springs, arrangement of.-A mechanism for automatically reclosing a switch, shown as mounted on a pole, comprises a motor 5 rotating a crank wheel 8 through reduction gearing, the wheel 8 acting through a rod 9 on a lever 2 which is rotatable clockwise through 120‹ to stress a spring (not shown), which thereupon recloses the switch and also rotates the lever 2 in the reverse direction. The rod 9 has a lost motion connection with the wheel 8 such that, after 180‹ rotation of the latter, the rod moves by itself under the return action of the lever 2. When the switch opens, a contact 1 closes to energize the motor 5 from the conductors 6, the circuit including a rotatable conducting segment 14 and finger 12. When the wheel 8 is rotated by the motor, an alternative circuit for the motor is made by conducting ring 10 and finger 11, so that the motor continues to rotate until the wheel 8 has made one revolution and closed the switch; thereby opening the contact 1. Towards the end of the movement of wheel 8, a pin 24 thereon engages an arm 21 and, by means of a pawl 22, steps the disc 13 on a tooth, a pawl (not shown) retaining it in this position. If the switch remains closed, the relay 18, which was energized with motor 5, is de-energized simultaneously with the motor, thus allowing its contacts 17 to close the circuit through finger 15 and segment 14 of a resetting coil 16, which raises the two pawls, so that the disc 13 is returned to its original position by the spring 19. If the switch opens again after being closed, the contact 1 recloses and prevents the contacts 17 closing and resetting the parts, the pin 24 stepping the disc 13 another tooth. After a predetermined number of attempts to reclose, the segment 14 passes from under the finger 12 and further attempts are prevented. The first attempt at reclosure takes place after a shorter interval than the subsequent attempts, the intervals depending on the speed of the motor.
