[Class 83 (iv).] n an arc welding machine, in which the welding head travels longitudinally of the work, the work-table canbeliftedor lowered and the work can be rotated about its longitudinal axis by means associated with the work-table. Two welding heads 4 arranged to weld the same or different seams, are adjustably mounted on rotatably adjustable brackets 3 on columns 1, 2 which may be traversed in the same or opposite directions along the joint by two screwed shafts 9 rotated by chains 8 and worm gear 7 through tumblers and fluid gear 6 from a motor 5. One of the columns may remain stationary while the other is traversed. The work is mounted on a carriage 11 on rollers 12 which may be rotated by a motor 13 when welding circumferential seams, the traverse of the column being stopped. One welding head may weld circumferential seams and the other helical seams. The carriage is run on to rails 24 on a table 14 which is raised and lowered hvdraulicallv from a cylinder 23 by a rack 22 and pinion 21 which operates racks 15, 16 and pinions 17, 18 through bevel gear. Heavy work such as boiler drums, tanks, buoys can thus be easily brought into and removed from the machine.
