Abstract
<PICT:0386560/III/1> In a process for the electrical purification of gases in which the electric discharge field is supplied with impulse potentials of short duration, e.g. 10<-5> to 10<-8> seconds, the discharge field is subdivided into a number of sections or groups of sections connected in parallel to the high tension supply and in which each branch connection from the high tension supply to the individual sections is fitted with a separate impulse spark gap, the gaps being so arranged that each spark gap functions at a different time from each of the others, e.g. they may function in succession at equal time intervals. In the arrangement shown, the discharge field is divided into three parts 6, 7, 8, each fitted with impulse spark gaps 10, 11, 12. These are caused to function at different times by resistances 16, 17, 18 of different values placed in each supply lead from the high tension supply 1, 2. The resistances may be replaced by chokes of differing values, or the air gaps between the individual spark gaps may be of different sizes.
