[Class 8 (ii).] A process for the partial separation of gas mixtures comprises, as applied to air, a first rectification under pressure in a column bl, giving a liquid mixture rich in oxygen which is transferred by a pipe 5 to low-pressure rectifier b<11>, and a residue mainly of nitrogen which is liquefied in a condenser c and used as washing liquid in the rectifier b<11> from which the liquid rich in oxygen collecting at the base is drawn off to the condenser c in which it is vaporized outside the low-pressure column. Alternatively, the two bodies of liquid may be transferred from their columns direct to the condenser. The nitrogen from the top of the column b<11> passes off through regenerators A<1>, All alternately, these regenerators cooling incoming compressed air ; while the oxygen mixture and a separate body of air at lower pressure pass alternately through regenerators B<1>, B<11>. Part of the high-pressure air is delivered to a circuit comprising a compressor h, motor k, and exchangers and passes to the low-pressure column. Highpressure air cooled, e.g. by an ammonia refrigerating machine, is liquefied in a coil z and delivered to the column b<1> to compensate cold losses. In a modification, in place of a circuit of compressed air in the motor compressor, nitrogen is withdrawn in gaseous form from the condenser c on the high-pressure side and after passage through this circuit passes away with the nitrogen from the low-pressure column to the exchangers.
