Abstract

385,035. Moulding pies &c. HARBER, L. S., POINTON, J. E., Westwood Works, Peterborough, and BAKER PERKINS, Ltd., Hythe Road, Willesden, London. Sept. 16, 1931, No. 25980. [Class 87 (ii).] Pies, tarts, &c. are moulded and filled by a machine comprising an intermittently rotated table 10 having sleeves 19 supporting pans, the pans being lifted at successive working stations by tubular members 27, 59, 63 mounted on a vertically reciprocating crosshead 22. At the first station the pan is moved into engagement with a dough stream issuing from the nozzle 38 of a depositing machine having rollers 31, Fig. 1, which are intermittently rotated by ratchet mechanism 32, 33, 34 in order to deliver a measured quantity of dough. The dough stream is severed by a wire 39, Fig. 6, maintained in contact with the nozzle by a spring 45, Fig. 1, and reciprocated by cam mechanism 42, 41. The pan, with its measured dough portion, is lowered on to its sleeve 19 and the table is then advanced to the next working station, at which the pan is raised by a spring- pressed cup 48, Fig. 6, into contact with the yielding annular wall 55 of a fixed moulding die 51. The dough is thus shaped in a closed chamber whereby subsequent trimming of the edge is eliminated. The wall 55 may have an electrical heating element 56 to prevent adherence of dough. A valve 57 in the die admits air after the moulding operation to facilitate the discharge of the moulded pie, which is then lowered back, in its pan, on to the sleeve 19. The table is then advanced to stations where the pie receives a filling from a nozzle 60 and a covering from a nozzle 62, these nozzles communicating with chambers to which material is first supplied from hoppers 64, 65, Fig. 3, by an oscillating ported valve 69, the material then being discharged through the nozzles by plungers 79, 80 actuated through bell-crank levers by cams. In the absence of a pie, the filling material falls through the tubes 59, 63 to a receptacle 61. The machine is driven through gearing by an electric motor 16. Both or one of the depositors may be dispensed with, or temporarily disconnected.
