Abstract

<PICT:0383540/III/1> Hard objects of silicon carbide are obtained by attaching carbon bodies 4 of the desired shape to one or both of two spaced electrodes 2 embedded in a mixture 6 of silica and carbon, and striking an arc between the electrodes. Silicon vapour generated from the mixture 6 forms a pocket 5 which increases in size until it surrounds the bodies 4, which are converted into silicon carbide without change in shape. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 extends the invention to the production of unspecified metallic carbides. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
