[Class 4.] An aeroplane has statically balanced engines and propellers a, b normally set parallel to the line of flight but capable of being tilted by servomotors 9 for climbing or descending, the pitching couple of the servomotors being counteracted by movements of an auxiliary elevator 3. The propellers are mounted in pairs in staggered relation and rotate in opposite directions to counteract gyroscopic disturbances. The engines pivot with the propellers, and two, four, eight or twelve may be used, their resultant thrust passing through the centre of gravity of the machine. The machine is fitted with an automatic stabilizer acting on an elevator 4. A vane 21 acting as a loss of flying speed indicator may act on the servomotors to tilt the propellers, and when in an air pocket means may be provided for preventing the operation of the surface 3 and therefore causing the machine to plunge as the propellers are tilted upwards. A vane 22 responsive to side gusts acts on the automatic device which is not described. There may be a usual tractor propeller in addition to the tiltable propellers.
