Abstract

383,378. Controlling flow of lubricant. ROWLEDGE, A. J., Ellerslie, Trowels Lane, RUBBRA, A. A., Red Roofs, Carlton Road, and FARMER, G. H., Sunnydale, Shamrock Street, all in Derby. Oct. 14, 1931, No. 28537. [Class 12 (iii).] In altitude controls for aircraft engines in which the throttle valve is actuated both manually and by an aneroid - controlled relay preventing excessive charging of the engine, means are provided for limiting the movement of the relay device so that it may be overridden by the manual control for obtaining extra power at ground levels, and the supply of lubricating-oil to the engine cylinders may be adjusted simultaneously with the throttle. Fig. 1 shows an aneroid capsule a subject to blower - outlet pressure by a connection a<4> and connected to a valve b<1>, which controls communication between pipes d, d<1> leading to the blower outlet and inlet respectively and passages e<2>, e<3> leading to opposite sides of the relay piston f. This piston is connected to one end of a floating lever g, which is connected intermediately to the manual control h<1>, and at its other end to the throttle g<3>. The movement of the relay piston in the direction for closing the throttle is limited by an adjustable stop i. Normally, the manual control is moved only in the upper part of the segment h<2>, but, when extra power is required at ground levels, the manual control is moved through a gate slot or the like to the bottom of the sector, as shown in Fig. 1, thereby opening the throttle farther than that permitted by the relay, the piston of which is held against the stop i. The gate slot serves to give the pilot warning of the necessity of returning the manual control to its normal position, but a further indication is given by the action of the relay in moving the throttle past the fully-open position as the aircraft ascends, thereby reducing the power. The middle of the lever g may also be connected to a three-armed lever connected to the ignition-timing lever, to the fuel-metering device of the carburetter, and to a cock controlling the flow of lubricant to the cylinders. Specification 356,619, [Group XXVII], is referred to.
