Abstract

Mercaptophenols are obtained by treating an alkali salt of phenol or a - or b -naphthol or homologue thereof containing a free o- or p-position with an alkali disulphide. The alkali phenoxide may be made in situ. Alkali sulphide may be added to inhibit the formation of aryl disulphide compounds. According to examples, monothiocatechol, mercapto-o-cresol, 1-mercapto-2-naphthol, and mercapto-1-naphthol are obtained from the corresponding alkali phenoxides and a dimercaptophenol from borium phenate.
