Abstract

<PICT:0382314/III/1> A furnace for performing reactions between gases and molten substances is lined with ceramic material and contains in its lower part a mass of electrically conducting bodies r to which current is supplied by top, bottom, and intermediate electrodes or groups of electrodes c, a, b<1>. Carbon or coke forms a convenient resistance material. The charge g is arranged above the mass r and the reacting gas is supplied through a pipe h. The liquid product is withdrawn through a tap-hole b, and e is a gas outlet. The electrodes may be connected to a three-phase transformer and resistances may be arranged in the electrode circuits to obtain the required current distribution. The furnace may be used for the reduction of sodium cyanate to cyanide by carbon monoxide, for the transformation of metallic oxides into fused anhydrous chlorides by the aid of chlorine, and for producing anhydrous sodium sulphide from sodium sulphate by the aid of carbon monoxide.
