Abstract

382,050. Machine for making infants' diapers. DEHN, F. B., 103, Kingsway, London.-(Diapex Corporation; 130, West 31st Street, New York, U.S.A.) Oct. 9, 1931, No. 28124. [Class 141.] A machine particularly for making multilayered diapers comprises sheet-feeding means. cutting-means and fastener-inserting means. The diaper shown in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises a layer 1 of waterproof paper, a layer of absorbent padding 2 such as cellulose and a layer 3 of open mesh fabric. The sheet from which the diapers are severed is made by the apparatus shown in Fig. 6 by uniting the layers 1, 2, 3 coming from three corresponding rolls 24, 14, 42. The layers may be gummed by disks 29, 47 dipping into troughs containing adhesive and applying spaced lines of gum to the underside of the layers 1, 3. Rollers 21, 22 are employed to press the layers together and are driven through belt and toothed gearing and transmit motion by chain gearing to the adhesive applying disks 29, 47 and to a roller 56 normally pressing on the roll 55 of compound fabric. Idlers 26, 19, 45 are suitably placed. The roller 56 may be raised and looked in position by a catch 63 to allow of removal of the roll 55 if required to a different position for the severing and fastener applying mechanism. Adhesive may be dispensed with and the layered sheet may be fed directly to the fastener applying and severing mechanism the layout for which is indicated in Fig. 3. The fastener applying means 72, 73, 76, 77, 201, 202 are commercially sold presses of known construction, capable of inserting washers and eyelets and in the case of the presses 201, 202, string 12 which is entrapped by the eyelets and discs. A reinforcing washer 12a is applied underneath the strip. The diapers are cut along inclined lines 99, 100 when the sheet reaches an oscillating knife 170 indicated in full and dotted lines in its two positions for severing the diaper. The presses 72, 73, 76, 77 apply two of the fastening elements to each section of diaper which fasteners are respectively indicated at 72a, 73a, 76a, 77a. The remaining fasteners with string attached are applied by the presses 201, 202 after severance of the sections. The operation of the knife is shown in Fig. 12 and certain details of the construction in Fig. 16. The knife comprises a fixed upper blade 171 which is secured to a cross member 172 and may be adjustable and a lower movable blade 170. The member 172 is provided with bosses 174 secured to posts 175 connected by a cross piece with a central boss, through which reciprocates a stem carrying the lower blade. The movable lower blade is carried bv a cross head which is vertically reciprocated and freely slides up and down the vertical posts 175. The blade 170 is periodically elevated through a slot in a circular table 181 to sever the strip fed across the table which oscillates with the knife supporting frame. The frame is swung to either of two positions for making the cut. The oscillation is obtained by linkage and cam action, stops which may be in the form of rubber or springs being provided to determine accurately the position at which the knife halts. A cam shaft 116 is driven by spur and chain- and-sprocket gearing and transmits motion through cams 118 and rollers 120, 121 to a rod 123 and thence to a pivoted lever 130 and rack 133. The rack rotates a pinion 140 and through a pawl and ratchet causes rotation of a pair of oppositely driven feed rollers, one only 156 being shown. The feed rollers are provided with smooth parts for the passage of the diaper eyelets and with roughened parts 157 for effecting the feed of the strip. When the rack 133 reaches the end of its stroke there is a pause in the feed while the knife makes one of the diagonally transverse cuts. The operation of the machine is as follows. A strip of multilayered paper in a roll is fed along a table 75 up to the group of presses 72, 73, 76, 77. A series of pedals are depressed by corresponding cams and apply four discs or buttons and this operation is continued. The strip passes between the blades 170, 171 and the blade 170 is elevated to make one of the cuts. A lever and linkage swings the knife from one angular position to the opposite, and the strip is fed to a new cutting position. The diapers thus cut are moved to the presses 201, 202 which are correspondingly operated to apply a string and disc. The completed diapers are fed to the packing position.
