Abstract

381,725. Canning or bottling under vacuum. CHORLTON, F. O. L., Riverside Works, Bury. Oct. 16, 1931, No. 28745. [Class 49.] In that type of machine for sealing stoppers or lids on cans or bottles in vacuo in which the can &c. 11 is supported on a table 12, which is vertically movable within a cylinder 10 positioned below the sealing-chamber 1, and which moves up into that chamber where a lid is sealed to the can &c., the sealing-cylinder 10 sliding vertically in an outer support, movable intercepting means are provided for closing the aperture leading into the sealing-chamber after withdrawal of the can &c. and before the cylinder is withdrawn from airtight contact with the underside of the chamber 1, for preventing inlet of air into the sealing-chamber after a sealing operation is completed. As shown, a shutter 2 is reciprocated by being connected via a link 3 to a member 4 pivoted at 5 on the machine frame, the lower end of this member engaging a rod 6 sliding in the machine frame 9 and being reciprocated by a cam 7 on a shaft 8. The shutter may be a rotating circular disc having an eccentric aperture and being pivoted in the machine frame.
