Abstract

381,709. Heating and ventilating apparatus. ARNOLD, C., 11, Southampton Buildings, London. - (Air - Way Electric Appliance Corporation ; 2101, Auburn Avenue, Toledo, Ohio, U.S.A.) Sept. 29, 1931, No. 27167. [Class 137.] A method of heating and ventilating a room comprises withdrawing air from the room below the level of the breathing line (defined as a level of four feet), heating the withdrawn air to a temperature only moderately higher than the temperature desired in the room and returning it below the breathing line in a horizontal direction with a velocity in excess of convection velocities, the air being circulated in relatively large quantities. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises an upright casing 21 having upper and lower horizontal compartments separated by a heating element 23 substantially filling the cross section of the casing and forming a plurality of air passages extending vertically from one compartment to the other, air circulating means 32 in one of the compartments and inlet and discharge orifices 30, 29 communicating with the lower and upper compartments respectively. The casing 21 is preferably built into a wall and is of such dimensions as to fit between adjacent studs of the wall 25, 26 and beneath the first cross bridging 28. An additional inlet communicating with the outside atmosphere is preferably provided in the rear wall of the casing, the inlets being simultaneously controlled by dampers 37, 38 mounted in different angular positions on a shaft 39 operated by a knob 40. A blower 32 driven by a motor 41 is disposed between the inlets. The heating element comprises a chamber 23 with a series of outwardly extending vertical fins 24 and is supplied with heating fluid by inlet and outlet pipes 53, 54. Complete circulation of the heating fluid is promoted by a partition 54a extending from between the pipes 53, 54 nearly to the opposite wall of the chamber. The inlet pipe is controlled by a valve 55 operated magnetically and coupled with the circuit of the an motor. In a modified form an electric heater is employed.
