[Class 51 (i).] In a furnace wall or roof incorporating cooling water or steam tubes 1 between which are disposed refractory bricks or tiles 2 whose abutting faces are formed with serrations or holes to co-operate with complementary projections on retaining members 4 arranged between the bricks, the members 4 are formed in two parts each engaging with a separate brick. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the retainers 4, shaped to fit around two adjacent tubes 1, are made in two parts which are arranged backto-back, each part having serrations 3 engaging similar serrations in the abutting faces of two adjacent T-shaped filling bricks 2. Figs. 8 and 9 show a modified form of brick and retainer, each part of the latter being formed with pins 8 to engage in holes 9 in the end face of a brick. The retainers 4 terminate short of the inner faces of the bricks and are anchored, at their outer ends, to a fixed outer wall 28 by the engagement, in holes in the retainers, of hooks 11 secured to girders 12. The weight of the bricks and retainers may be taken, as shown in Fig. 3, by two-part metal clamps 22, firmly secured to two adjacent tubes 1 by bolts 23, or by a girder 24, Fig. 18, having teeth 25 projecting between the tubes 1 and secured to a beam 12 fixed along the foot of the wall. In the construction shown in Fig. 13, the retainers 4 are shaped to fit the tubes 1 at their inner ends only, the outwardly projecting tongues, in this case, passing through clamp members 14 each of which is forced into resilient gripping contact with two adjacent tubes by a cotter pin 16 and a spring 17. Fig. 20 shows a suspended roof construction in which the two-part retainers 4 are supported by hooks 11 secured to spaced bars 29, the latter being mounted on the main girders 12 so as to be slidable thereon.
