Abstract

In analytical distillation apparatus comprising an elongated column 16 the upper end of which is cooled while the vapours to be analysed are introduced at the lower end, the column is surrounded by an evacuated insulating jacket 10 spaced apart therefrom and provided with a reflecting surface. The column 16 is supplied with liquid or gaseous samples to be analysed from containers 11, 12, and the fractions obtained are led to containers 14, 14a of known volume. The jacket is enlarged at its upper end to form a cooling chamber 22 containing a vessel 48 through which refrigerant is passed and which may be filled with glass beads, the space between the vessel 48 and the jacket being filled with material of high conductivity, e.g. copper powder to which access of moisture is prevented by sealing material. The lower end of the column is enlarged to form a distilling bulb 23 and displacement bulb 24 surrounded by a resistance heating coil and mat 30. The fractions to be analysed and the mercury are introduced through three-way valves 28, 29. The space between the column and the jacket is closed at top and bottom to give a dead air space. The jacket is plated with a film of silver, platinum, &c., strips being left to permit observation of the column. The latter is preferably 1-6 feet in length and less than 5 mm. <PICT:0380220/III/1> <PICT:0380220/III/2> in diameter and is packed with a coil 38 of wire, Fig. 6, normally of greater diameter than the column and having its exterior surface 39 ground flat to fit the tube.
