Abstract

Artificial sponges of more regular density are made by pressing the viscose containing a substance adapted to form pores into a tubular mould, coagulating the viscose by heat, and after removal of the pore-forming substance from the solidified mass, cutting the latter into sections perpendicular to its longitudinal axis. The lateral dimensions of the tubular mould are so chosen as to permit of the obtaining of sponges of the correct size simply by cutting sections as described above; and the section of the mould may be round, oval or angular, and its surface may be flat, undulating or grooved. The mould may be in one piece or it may be divided longitudinally, and it is conveniently charged by worm gear.
