Abstract

378,970. Statistical-apparatus. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES., Siemenstadt, Berlin. May 22, 1931, No. 15176. Convention date, June 2, 1930. [Class 106 (i).] A record card controlled statistical apparatus is provided with a plurality of translating mechanisms for dealing with cards or strips perforated in accordance with different systems of notation. The perforations defining a given value can differ as regards their number and/or their position as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 wherein the number 257 is represented. The invention is shown applied to a sorting machine of the type described in Specification 359,073 with four electromagnets controlling the sorting mechanism individually or collectively. The electromagnets A .. D, Fig. 9 are adapted to be connected to separate groups of contacts Ka .. Kd, K1 .. K10, or K1<1> .. K10<1>, by means of a selector switch SCH which couples the contacts for operation by a corresponding set or a single set of sensing members. In the central position of the switch a card with code perforations as shown in Fig. 1, is analysed, the contacts Ka .. Kd are operated by sensing pins Fa .. Fd, Fig. 4, mounted on levers 1 pivoted about an axis 3 and rocked by means of an arm 4 on a shaft 6. The armatures of the electromagnets A .. D are connected to notched controlling bars Sa .. Sd, the notches being so arranged that on displacement of one or more of the bars by the energization of one of more of the electromagnets a set of notches will be aligned with one of twelve levers H1 .. H12. These levers are pivoted on an axis 9 and each carries a roller 10 bearing on a cam 12 on a shaft 13, the rotation of which permits a lever to be tilted under the action of its spring 11 so as to rock a pivoted arm 15. The extent of the movement of the arm 15 depends on the lever selected and by means of a known arrangement of tongues 16 and supporting wires 17, as described in the abovementioned Specification, permits a card fed from the plate 8 to pass to its appropriate sorting compartment. The frame carrying the sensing pins and contacts is mounted on a screwed spindle 18 so as to dispose the pins over any particular column of the card. In Figs. 7 and 8 twelve sensing pins F1 .. F12 are provided for co-operation with twelve contacts K1 .. K12. By the movement of the switch SCH, Fig. 9, over to the left the contacts K1 &c. are connected to the electromagnets A .. D, and by the movement of the switch to the right the contacts K1<1> &c. are connected to the electromagnets. The arrangement of contacts K1<1> &c. can also be employed for cards perforated according to the system represented in Fig. 2 and a set of four of these contacts may be adapted for use with code cards as shown in Fig. 1.
