[Class 60.] Guides and rests ; gauges ; trueing rotating tools.-In a machine for bevelling the edges of soles, particularly the heel edges of reinforced loose insoles, the sole is moved substantially parallel to the axis of a grinding-wheel while maintained in a position non-radial to the wheel by guiding means which may be adjusted to vary the angle of the bevel produced on the sole. The shaft 5, mounted in a head 3 is rotated at approximately 2500 r.p.m. and carries a grinding-wheel 7 which is about 7 inches in diameter and ¥ inch wide, preferably of soft composition. A bracket 9 carries a circular dust-collecting hood 11 enclosing the wheel and provided with an opening 83 connected to the exhaust passage 87 leading from the hood. The spring 83 is closed by a butterfly valve 89 which may be opened periodically by the operator to allow the suction to draw away accumulations of dust. A stationary sleeve 13 enclosing the grinding-spindle carries a bracket 17 having a guide rib over which moves a slide 21. The slide is adjusted along its guide by a threaded spindle 29 operated from a hand-wheel 31 and is clamped in position by a bolt 25. The forward end of the slide has an arcuate guideway 37 along which is adjustable a block 39 carrying a bifurcated member 41 which straddles the grinding-wheel and which carries, on a pivot 45, the spring-urged work support 43. The member 41 also carries an adjustable work-positioning foot 51 and the work, shown as a reinforced insole, is held between this foot and the work support 43. An edge gauge comprising a blade 53 is secured to the rear of the foot and is arranged to project about 1/32 inch from the lower surface of the foot to a position closely adjacent the grinding-wheel. The guideway 37 is concentric with the lower edge of the gauge and the adjustment is such that the angle of the bevel may be varied between 11‹ and 31‹. The screw spindle 29 serves to adjust the workguiding mechanism as the grinding-wheel wears away. A dressing-wheel 55 comprising a number of corrugated steel discs mounted on a pin 57 is carried on a link 59 and may be brought into operation by means of a hand-lever 65 which is moved against a spring 73 which normally raises the dressing-wheel clear of the grinding-wheel. To allow access to the wheel one side of the hood is formed as a door 77 pivoted on a pin 79 and secured in the closed position by a screw 81.
