378,253. Making dynamo - electric machines. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd., 88, Regent Street, London.-(Assignees of Sorensen, C. E. ; 8120, East Jefferson Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.) Oct. 8, 1931, No. 28012. Convention date, Jan. 19. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] Punches ; forging dies.-Segments for a commutator are made by rolling a bar of copper to suitable cross section, cutting off lengths so as to form one end of the dovetail for engaging the holding rings forming the connecting lugs by the pressure of dies and then forming the other end of the dovetail ; slots are then machined in the lugs to receive the conductors. In the method shown the segments are formed in pairs which are afterwards separated. A bar 20, Fig. 4, is cut into pieces 21 of the shape shown in Fig. 3, which are then pressed by dies into the shape shown in Fig. 2. The piece shown by the dotted lines 23 is then removed and the segments separated along the middle link. Figs. 8, 9, and 10 show the dies employed. The rod 20 is fed through a slot in the die 28 into the die 24 and is cut off in lengths by the motion of the die 28. The lugs 17 are formed by a heading die 27 co-operating with the die 24 as shown.
