Abstract

377,701. Motor vehicle steering gear. LJUNGSTROM, B., 83, Linnegatan, Stockholm. April 21, 1931, No. 11789. Convention date, March 5. [Class 79 (v).] In motor vehicles having two separatelysteered wheels 1 the steering mechanism comprises a single hand-wheel 12 actuating two steering shafts 20 or corresponding motion transmitting members arranged substantially longitudinally of the vehicle and wholly supported by the vehicle body or frame, these shafts each actuating the corresponding steering wheel through an articulated connection. Space is thus left between the steering shafts for the engine and other parts. The steering shafts may be inclined towards one another as shown, or they may be parallel, and the hand wheel 12 may be on one of the shafts or between them or on either side of both shafts. In the construction shown the shafts 20 are provided at their upper ends with bevel gears 19 meshing with a bevel wheel 18 fixed on the shaft 17 of the hand-wheel 12. At the lower end each shaft 20 has a steering gear 6 operating an arm 8 connected to the corresponding steering swivel by parallel links 9, 10, the steering swivels being pivoted at 3 on independent arms 4 pivoted to the frame at 5. The springing movements of the wheels 1 cause lateral movements of the gears 6 ; to permit these movements the gears are movable in guides 11 and the upper ends of the tubes 13 enclosing the shafts 12 can oscillate about centres 24, the tubes being fixed to casings 21 having cylindrical surfaces 23a contacting with corresponding surfaces on a fixed casing 15 supporting the hand-wheel spindle. 17. Modifications are described in which the shafts 20 are parallel and are geared together at their upper ends by (1) two transverse parallel shafts and worm gearing, and (2) rope or chain gearing having tensioning means for the rope or chain.
