Abstract

376,153. Tilting pad bearings. AKTIEBOLAGET NOMY, 2, Norrmalmstorg, Stockholm. Nov. 14, 1931, No. 31574. Convention date, Nov. 14, 1930. [Class 12 (i).] A tilting pad bearing has means to cause a pivotal movement of the pads about an axis different from the tilting axis for the automatic adjustment of the pads into their tilted positions corresponding to the direction of rotation. As shown for a bearing with two rows of pads 3, Figs. 2 and 7, the bearing surface 5 of the bearing ring 4, the perimeter of the supporting driving ring 2 and the co-operating faces of the pads 3 are spherical. Each pad 3 has a pair of ribs 7, 7<1>, and the driving ring pairs of grooves 10, 10<1>, each pad being pivoted on a pin 8 carried by the driving ring 2. Rotation of the shaft in either direction causes each pad to pivot on the pin 8 to a position in which the pad edge 12 engages a rib 11 on the ring 2 so that one of the ribs 7 crosses a groove 10 while the other rib 71 overlies and tilts into the other groove 10<1> thus forming a space between the bearing faces of the pads and the ring 4 for wedge lubricant films. The pins 8 may be located at or slightly to one side of the centre of gravity of the pads and the grooves 10, 101 may be formed in the pads and the ribs 7, 71 on the driving ring. In a modification, the pivotal movement of the pads upon reversal in the direction of rotation is caused by friction set up by a member 16, Fig. 10, which is spring- urged against one side of the pads 3. The extent of the pivotal movement is limited by pins 20 on the driving ring 2, each pin engaging an arcuate groove 21 in a pad. Two members 16 may be incorporated in one bearing. In a modification the member 16 is omitted and the pins 8 are arranged to one side of the pad. This construction may be modified by omitting the pins 20 and grooves 21, the pivotal movement being limited by flanges on each side of the ring 2. The invention may be applied to bearings having non-rotatable pads.
