Abstract
A process for the production of pure crystalline alumina in which aluminous materials such as bauxite are subjected to a reducing smelting process with sulphur compounds, such as iron sulphide, and coke is characterized in that the liquid slag thus obtained, after being drawn off from the iron alloy, is transferred to a refining furnace wherein it is allowed to cool, say to 1400 DEG C., till crystallization of the alumina takes place. After reheating, say to 1900 DEG C. and allowing to stand, say for ten minutes, refining means, viz. iron pyrites, iron and subsequently coal, are added. After say ten minutes, the refined upper layer is withdrawn, allowed to solidify and washed with acid, if necessary, or treated with water, steam, &c., as in Specification 232,549, [Class 1 (iii), Oxides &c., Metallic]. The sludge formed during this treatment may be dried, briquetted and added to the second refining operation with the necessary sulphur compounds. The waste slag may be added to the original charge, or treated according to the present method separately or admixed with the sludge briquettes.
