[Class 27.] Articles stored separately on sliding carrier.- In an electrically-operated coin-freed article delivery apparatus, the articles are stored separately between the inclined shelves 49, Fig. 8, of a carrier which descends through the distance between two shelves when an electromagnet 28 is energized by prepayment, the core 36 of the magnet forming an escapement with studs 48 on the carrier. The article slides off to an inclined shelf 46 for delivery. There are several columns, e.g. five, of articles of different prices. The column with the desired price is selected by moving a pointer 22, Fig. 3, over a dial 19 thereby bridging pair of contacts 20 corresponding to the article. The circuit is completed by inserting a single coin of the proper value or several coins corresponding in value to the single coin. This causes an arm 15 to move over a dial 18 and make the circuit through a contact 17 corresponding to the pair of contacts 20 already chosen. The apparatus may be arranged to receive a coin of higher value than is necessary and to deliver the appropriate change with the article selected. Coin action, electric-connection, weight, and multiple-coin.-An inserted coin 41, Fig. 1, makes connection between one wall 1 of the shoot and contacts 5 which project through an insulated wall. The number of contacts corresponds to the number of units of which the coin consists. As shown, the coin is five cents and completes the circuit to an electromagnet 8 five times. The core 9 of the magnet 8 rotates a ratchet wheel 11 through five teeth, thereby rotating the contact arm 15 to the five-cent contact 17 on the dial 18. It would be necessary to insert five single cent pieces in a one-cent shoot to rotate the wheel 11 the same amount. If the coin unit is five cents, and the largest coin is twenty-five cents, one and two cent coins may be used, these actuating another electromagnet and ratchet wheel which, when a total of five cents is inserted, actuates the electromagnet 8 once. In a modification, only one contact 5 is used, and a series of electromagnets connected in parallel is arranged to make and break the circuit of the magnet 8 a number of times corresponding to the number of coin units. The circuit to the magnet 8 may also be completed as shown in Fig. 4. The coin drops through inclined pivoted shoot sections 37 which are tilted by its passage to cause mercury switches 42 to close momentarily the circuit to the electromagnet 8. Change-giving apparatus.-In a case where a twenty-five cent piece is used to obtain goods costing 15 cents, the arm 22 is adjusted to select the goods. When the corresponding electromagnet 28 is energized to cause delivery of the goods, its core closes a contact in the circuit of an electromagnet which cuts out the coin-counting magnet 8 and switches over the coin contacts 5 to an electromagnet operating similarly to the magnet 8. This electromagnet through a ratchet wheel moves a contact arm over a disc bearing contacts corresponding to the coin units which must be delivered as change. The change is delivered from sliding columns operating in the same way as the goods columns.
