Abstract

<PICT:0374166/III/1> <PICT:0374166/III/2> In apparatus for the treatment of offal, comprising an outer casing, a digestion chamber within the outer casing to which offal is continuously supplied and in which the offal is subjected to the action of steam or solvent, and a secondary screen on to which the resultant mixture of solid and liquid products is continuously discharged from the digestion chamber and through which liquid products pass to continuous discharge and by which solid products are retained, the said solid products being continuously removed therefrom, provision is made for clearing the interstices of the secondary screen while the treatment is in progress. Offal is fed at 11 into a chamber A containing a rotary digester in the form of a screening drum B carrying externally, helical brushes E and blades 4 serving to clean a fine meshed sieve D and to convey solid material unable to pass through the sieve D to an outlet 13. The sieve D may also be cleaned by steam or water jets at 14. Steam or solvent enters at 19, uncondensed steam being drawn off at 20. Liquid products leave at 17, silt being fed by worm conveyers 15, 16 to said outlet. A thermometer 21 is provided. The secondary screen and the brush means are relatively adjustable. In a modification the secondary screen is in the form of a drum coaxial with the drum B and rotating at a different speed. Fish waste and fish offal are treated in the apparatus to obtain glue, fats, oils, and the like.
