Abstract
373,594. Retting. GLATZ, E., GLATZ, A., and GLATZ, E., (trading as GLATZ, J.), Niedenfels, Rheinpfalz, Germany. Nov. 21, 1930, No. 35098. Convention date, Jan. 8. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 120 (i).] Incrusting substances are separated from fibres by first treating with an alkali bleaching lye with or without resin dissolving substances and swelling media, and then adding dilute acid with constant pH measurement until a weak acid reaction is given and the chlorine so freed from the bleaching lye has converted the remaining lignin into the water or alkalisoluble form. The fibres may advantageously be subsequently treated with weak alkali and a bleaching agent. In an example, air dried fibre is placed in a Hollander with water and heated to 25-30‹ C. Sufficient sodium hypochlorite is added to convert all the lignin into the alkali-soluble form. After half an hour dilute acid is added until the pH value is 1-2, and the mass allowed to stand for one hour. The calculated quantity of dilute caustic soda to give an alkali content of 2 per cent is added, the whole allowed to stand for another hour, and the material finally washed. If the material has a weak bleaching capacity, half the chlorine may be added, a pH value of 1-2 obtained as above, the second half added, and the process repeated.
