Abstract

373,257. Charging coke ovens; coking processes. HILGER, G., 1A, Marienstrasse, Gleiwitz, Germany. Feb. 19, 1931, No. 5230. [Classes 51 (ii) and 55 (i).] Firm and lumpy coke is obtained from a coke oven charge by subjecting the fuel particles to a relative movement to bring them into intimate contact, covering the charge with a layer of coal dust, and forming channels in the charge to facilitate the escape of the distillates. The upper part of the charge is further compacted by ramming. The process may be employed for similar treatment of the coal by compression into blocks outside the coke oven. Apparatus for use in the process comprises a travelling charging truck carrying a filling and measuring bunker, and means for packing the coal into the oven, for making gas discharge passages, and for lifting the covers and inner chamber doors. The coal compacting means comprises rods or plates which extend into 'the charge and are caused to vibrate or rotate. A charging truck 2 runs on rails over the oven 1, and carries compression plates 5 mounted on rods 6, plungers 7 having ramming devices 8, a shaft 9 which raises and lowers lifting magnets 10 for the chamber lids 4, and a bunker 11 provided with filling hoppers 12. The fuel is fed from the main bunker either by conveying belts or by a pneumatic device, Fig. 11, with the aid of a cyclone 16, one of the passages 15 carrying the coal, and the other returning the compressed air and dust. Slides 18, Fig. 7, control the coal supply to the oven, and the gases that escape during charging are drawn through channels 19, 21 by a fan 20, and are burned with air, an ignition device 22 being provided. A levelling scraper belt 24 traverses the length of the bunker, and is adjustable in height, so that the thickness of the layer of coal dust supplied to the surface of the charge may be regulated. The compression of the charge is effected by vibration of plates or rods 5a, Fig. 12, which extend through the charge. These compressing means may be varied in shape, and placed at any depth in the charge, but normally they are arranged to compress the charge more at the top than at the bottom of the oven, as the charge at the bottom is already under compression due to the weight of the charge above. The rods may be provided with flexible plates, with spikes or with screw surfaces, and given a rotary motion, and the compacting means may be supported above the oven and lowered into it. When the charging and compression is completed, the rods 6 and stirrers 5 are withdrawn, and the machine 2 is moved along and the plungers 7 are lowered into the charge by means of a girder 28 and chains 29, the compressers 8 being weighted only after the plungers 7 have penetrated well into the charge. The plungers 7 are then withdrawn through the compressers 8 which remain on the surface of the charge until shortly before complete removal of the plungers, and so avoid pressing in of the gas withdrawal passages. The machine 2 is again moved, and the lids 4 replaced by the magnets 10. The inner doors 36 are pulled up by chains 34 before pushing out the finished charge. The chamber doors may be subdivided in the manner of Venetian blinds, each part having its over-lifting chain. Safety devices are provided in the mechanism driving the stirrers to prevent excessive compression of the charge.
