372,410. Refrigerating : cooling air. NAYLOR, E. J., 59, St. John's Wood Court, London. Oct. 14, 1931, No. 1316. [Classes 29 and 64 (ii).] - - In apparatus for cooling and drying air for ventilation &c. comprising a spray air washer 1 and an evaporator 6 in which the water for the sprays is cooled by partial evaporation due to the action of a steam jet ejector 12, a byepass pipe 20 between the pipe 8 supplying the cooled water to the washer and the warm return pipe 4 is provided with a valve 21 controlled by a thermostat 22 exposed to the cooled air, so that the warmed water may be mixed with the cooled water to ensure a constant air temperature. The evaporator may be located at the top of a building and the washer at the bottom, the water being lifted by a pump 3 from the collecting-tank of the washer, or they may be arranged nearly at the same level, in which case the water is pumped from the evaporator to the washer. The steam jet 11 is supplied from the heatting system of the building and the vapours are condensed in a tubular spray condenser 13 with hot well 18, or in a vessel traversed by a cooling-coil. The air may be treated in a series of spray washers, the coldest being supplied from the evaporator and the others from the several preceding collecting tanks. The ejector may have several steam nozzles fed in parallel from a common steam chest, regulation being effected by varying the number of steam nozzles in action.
