Abstract
<PICT:0372067/III/1> In the low-temperature separation of gaseous mixtures by partial liquefaction or by washing with a solvent, the necessary cold is produced by the rectification of a low-boiling liquid in the atmosphere of a non-condensable auxiliary gas. This liquid flows down a rectification column through which the auxiliary gas passes upward taking with it the low-boiling components, while the remaining component is obtained in a pure state at the bottom of the column. The liquid undergoing rectification is preferably that obtained by the washing or liquefaction of the gaseous mixture. The Figure shows the application of the invention to the separation of a mixture of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, methane, and nitrogen. This passes up the column 1 and is washed with liquid methane, supplied at 4; the gas thus enriched in hydrogen leaves the apparatus at 3. The contaminated washing liquid is introduced at 8 into the outer column 7 and meets an ascending current of auxiliary gas entering at 11. The carbon monoxide and nitrogen are thus expelled and the purified liquid methane is withdrawn at 9 and recirculated to the washing column. The auxiliary gas may be a part of the purified hydrogen withdrawn from the point 10; it may be admixed with nitrogen admitted by the pipe 12, in which case the nitrogen is partly dissolved by the methane and liberated again during the washing process, so that a gas mixture suitable for ammonia synthesis is taken off at 3.
