Abstract
<PICT:0370222/IV/1> In the manufacture of cellulose films &c. according to the method described in the parent Specification wherein the films are subjected to alternate wetting and drying operations at least two of the drying operations being effected under tension, the last drying operation under tension is so effected that the film is allowed to shrink, particularly in a transverse direction. As shown, the film 11 passes through a wetting bath 12, over driven rollers 27 . . 30 where the film is dried under tension, through a second wetting bath 13, then over rollers 341, 351, 361 where the film is allowed to hang in loops and is dried without tension, through a third wetting-bath 14 and finally over rollers 40 .. 43 to a driven take-up reel 25. The rollers 40 .. 43 are spaced apart to provide a free run of the film to allow transverse shrinkage, and are also loosely mounted upon their shafts 60 so as to permit of longitudinal shrinkage. The baths 13, 14 may contain glycerine &c. to give suppleness to the film and also a colouring medium. Modifications are described in which the rollers in the last drying stage are driven (1) through friction gearing, (2) at progressively decreasing speeds.
