Abstract

370,081. Doffing arrangements for reciprocating cans. MACKIE & SONS, Ltd., J., Albert Foundry, Belfast.-(Paisley, P. ; Vier Jahr Zeiten Hotel, Hamburg, Germany.) Jan. 24, 1931, No. 2448. [Class 120 (iii).] In textile preparing machines in which slivers are packed into cans carried on a reciprocating platform, the cans are doffed and replaced by empty ones by being alternately moved with the platform and retained by a fixed member against return movement so that they are progressively moved into the desired positions. Cans 1, 1a, 1b are carried by and reciprocate with a platform 5 consisting of two angle sides sliding on runners 6 sunk in the floor, the platform also carrying a plate 7 which is not in contact with the bottoms of the cans but reciprocates with the platform while the cans are being filled. Sliver is fed into can 1 from the rollers of a carding engine through an oscillating funnel 4 so that it is piled in the can in zig-zag formation, as in Specification 290,791, [Class 120 (iii), Yarns &c.]. The platform is reciprocated through a sprocket 14, crank 11, and connecting-rod 12 and, for each revolution of the sprocket 14, a pin 26 thereon depresses a pawl 25 and moves a ratchet wheel 24 carrying a cam 27 ; and, just as the can 1 is filled, the cam 27 reaches the position to depress one end of a pivoted lever 19 and cause the other end to engage a catch 17 indirectly connected to the plate 7 and prevent the latter from moving to the left during two complete reciprocations of the platform and cans. The plate can then make only a very slight movement to the right due to a stop 9 thereon engaging a stop 10 fixed to the floor. During these two reciprocations, the cans move the usual distance from left to right but they are permitted to move only a very short distance in the opposite direction by reason of spring-pressed pawls 28 on the plate 7 which engage against ribs on the bottoms of cans la, 1b and pawls 33 in recesses in the floor which engage the ribs on can 1. At the conclusion of the second reciprocation all the cans have been moved approximately one place to the right and sliver is being packed into can 1a, and the lever 19 is disengaged from the catch 17 thus allowing the plate 7 once more to reciprocate with the platform. Due to the pawls 33, the can 1 is moved progressively to the right during subsequent reciprocations of the platform and is finally pushed off the platform and advanced a short distance along the floor, or arrangements could be made to convey it any distance desired. When the plate 7 is released it is brought into its usual position relative to the platform by the stops 9. 10. The sliver between cans 1, 1a is held by a canvas belt 37 which is wide enough to cover a can and passes round rollers 36 so that the sliver is severed as the cans reciprocate. Alternative devices for this purpose consist of a plate which falls and clamps the sliver, or rollers freely mounted or positively rotated.
