Abstract
Anthraquinone derivatives are prepared by condensing an anthraquinone compound containing at least one amino group in an a -position with a diphenyl-monocarboxylic acid halide or anhydride. Compared with the corresponding a - acidylaminoanthraquinones described in Specifications 2702/09, 3055/09, 11440/10, 25184/10, 231,532, and 254,561, [all in Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], the products possess a shade occupying a position more towards the violet end of the spectrum, a higher intensity of colour and a greater affinity for vegetable fibre. The process is advantageously carried out in the presence of a high-boiling solvent, and an acid-binding agent may also be present. In examples the following compounds are condensed with diphenyl-4-carboxylic acid chloride (or anhydride): 1-aminoanthraquinone (dyes greenish-yellow), 1-amino-6-(or 7-)-chloranthraquinone (dyes more reddish shades), 1-amino-5-benzoylaminoanthraquinone (dyes yellow), 1-amino-4-methoxyanthraquinone (dyes yellow-orange), 4-amino-1 : 2-phenylimidazoleanthraquinone (dyes yellowish-orange), and the reduced condensation product from 5-nitroanthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid chloride and 1 - amino - 5 - benzoylaminoanthraquinone (dyes greenish-yellow). a -Diaminodianthrimides and carbazoles derived therefrom and a -aminoanthraquinone-1 : 2-acridones are also mentioned as suitable starting materials. Diphenyl-monocarboxylic acid halides and anhydrides are prepared by treating diphenyl with acetyl- or halogenacetyl-halide, oxidizing the resultant acetyl or o -halogenacetyl compound with alkaline hypochlorite solution, and converting the carboxylic acid so obtained into its acid halide or anhydride.
