Abstract

368,564. Propelling by fluid jets. SCHMIDT, P., 10, Arcostrasse, Munich, Germany. April 15, 1931, No. 11215. Convention date, April 23, 1930. [Classes 4 and 114.] For producing reaction forces on aircraft and other vehicles a combustible mixture is introduced through valves 2<1> into a tube 1 open at its opposite end, the tube containing a quantity of air ten to fifty times the mass of the combustible mixture which is exploded to drive out the air from the end 3 as the valves 2<1> automatically close. A fresh mass of cold air is introduced after each explosion. Part of the energy of the expelled gases may be used to drive a blower for recharging the tube, or a new charge may be induced through the valves 2<1> by the piston effect of the accelerated volume of air. A mixture of petrol and air is introduced as the combustible mixture, or petrol may be injected into the inlet end of the tube. The explosion chambers may be separated from the reaction chambers or a number of reaction chambers may be fed rom one explosion chamber. A number of such tubes 1 may be secured along an aircraft fuselage and fired in sequence, or along the span of and within a wing with appropriate deflectors at the outlets. Such outlets may be provided at three points in a horizontal triangle on the aircraft and vertical reactions controlled automatically by varying the quantity of combustible mixture in accordance with instruments indicating deviations from an equilibrium position. The device may be used with or instead of the usual screw propeller. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) the device may be applied to watercraft and the accelerated mass may consist of water. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
