Abstract
In the process of forming heat or sound insulating or waterproof coatings, particularly on steel panels, by spraying a fibrous material (with or without non-fibrous particles) and an adhesive simultaneously on to the surface, the fibrous material is supplied directly to the suction side of the fan in the form of a uniform suspension of small particles in air. A solid ingredient of the adhesive may be mixed with the fibrous material while a liquid ingredient is sprayed simultaneously on to the surface. Fibrous materials specified are asbestos, animal hair, wool and cotton; adhesives specified are sodium silicate, magnesite and magnesium chloride solution, and Portland cement and water. Waterproofing coatings may be formed by spraying simultaneously asbestos and bituminous materials. As shown, asbestos fibre is fed at A between moving plates 21, 22 with the hopper 1, and is opened by the band 2, 3 which delivers it to a hopper 4 leading direct to the suction inlet of a fan 5 having only a few blades spaced relatively far apart. A low-speed brush 7 regulates the supply to the hopper 4 and a high-speed brush 6 detaches and opens the fibre. The fan delivers through a hose 8 to a nozzle 9 adjacent to a spraying gun 10. The plates 21, 22 are pivoted at 23, 24, connected by a link 32, and driven from an eccentric 26 by a rocking lever 29 and link 30. The fan, the band, the brushes, and the moving plates are driven by an electric motor 11 through belts. The band 2 is driven from the spur gear 8, Fig. 3, keyed on a hollow shaft 20. The belt 17 drives a pulley 16, <PICT:0368368/III/1> <PICT:0368368/III/2> Fig. 3, with clutch face 18 which is normally engaged by a disc 19 on the shaft 20 under the action of a spring 34. One end of the spring is secured to a collar 33 on the hollow shaft 20, and the other end to a flanged sleeve 15 which normally rotates with the shaft. To disengage the clutch and stop the supply of fibre, a brake-band 39 on the sleeve 15 is tightened by Bowden mechanism from a lever 13 on or close to the spraying gun. The sleeve 15 is thus held against rotation, and a pin 35 on the shaft 20 engaging an inclined slot 36 in the sleeve 15 moves the shaft endwise. The supply of adhesive may be cut off at the same time by a valve trigger 12 on the spray gun. A separate machine for disintegrating rock asbestos may supply the disintegrated particles direct to the fan or may be used in series with the machine shown. The fibrous material may be fed to the fan by hand in the form of a uniform suspension.
